  • We helped hundreds of pets in September by donating a total of 2,176 blankets!
  • 83 different shelters, in 27 states received our blankets. Most received a handful of toys, and a thank you note to their staff, as well!
  • These blessings were only possible, due to the many volunteers and supporters who helped. Thank you!

Shelter "thank you's" for you!

"Thank you so much for getting us on the list to receive blankets from your organization! We use them with our kitten adoptions, and it is great to have something soft and familiar to send home with the babies. They had so many changes with coming to the shelter, surgery, and finding their forever homes. The blankets made that transition a lot easier!" ~ Aiken County Animal Shelter in Aiken, SC

"Thank you so much for your recent donation. Your gift blankets are particularly helpful, as we deal with the rescue of many cats in serious need of medical and human attention." ~ PAWS Animal Shelter in Tinley Park, IL

"A HUGE THANK YOU to you and all your volunteers who make the gorgeous blankets for our cats!!! A huge bag of blankets were hand delivered! Our adopters love the blankets - and we do as well. Our cats snuggle up with them in the windows at Petsmart, and they help to get people's attention. Thank you again!"  ~ Humane Haven Animal Shelter in Bolingbrook, IL

"A huge thank you to Comfort for Critters for donating blankets for some of the kitties here! These beautiful blankets will follow these kitties to their new homes!"             ~ Forever Love Rescue in Gettysburg, PA

thank you from Cat welfare advocates

"We received a package of beautiful, homemade blankets from CFC. We want to thank all of you for all that you do.

Cats like to be cozy and warm and it is important for them to have something of their own as they await adoption and as they transition into their new homes. The creations will also help us market the cats who are up for adoption, as they look so adorable on their cat-sized 'magic carpets'. We thank you again for your kindness and continued generosity to animals in need."

~ Cat Welfare Advocates in   San Jose, CA ~

Why we help shelter pets....

The comments left on our website really show why we do, what we do! Here's what your fellow volunteers say about helping homeless pets....

  • "I am not able to adopt them all, and that makes me sad. I think the blankets will give them something to knead on in the shelter and something familiar to go home with. I enjoy crocheting and there are only so many blankets, a household can store!" ~ Angel S. of Felton, DE

  • "I wanted to do something in memory of my 15 year old Chihuahua who passed away. I donated the rest of his food and some other items to the shelter, and wanted to do more. I googled and found the CFC program! I hope the blankets bring comfort to the animals and brighten up the shelter for both the animals and workers. Making blankets definitely helped me focus on something positive during the coronavirus quarantine. Crocheting has always been a stress reliever for me as well. I get to do something I enjoy and also make a difference, it's a win-win for me!" ~ Holly R. of Cranberry Township, PA

  • "Every animal deserves a nice soft place to snuggle into when they need to. I think the blanket can bring some comfort to them. I make basket shaped beds, with a crocheted cushion on the inside, since they often like small spaces. Hope it helps their comfort level." ~ Heather G. of Bristol, WI

  • "It makes me feel good because I feel that I am making a difference in the life of a small or big furry life. I think the blankets will give them some comfort, security and a snuggle spot of their own. I also love the challenge of trying new stitches that may intimidate me on a different kind of project. These furry creatures don't care if I make a small error! There's a benefit to me in a sense of giving and some stress free time."  ~ Pam S. of Belgrade, MT

  • "I wanted to find a way to do some good in my downtime, and when I heard about CFC I knew it was just the thing. I love animals, and I love knitting. I'm very happy to have found this group! I think the blankets will provide warmth and comfort to kitties who are awaiting their forever home. I love choosing the yarns and colors, and also imagining the kitties using them! I also find knitting them very calming and peaceful. Working on this project has been a great way to deal with the stress and anxiety we are all having to deal with right now. It helps keep me focused on positive thoughts and quiets my busy mind."  Teri W. of San Antonio, TX

Otober 2020 ~ Critter News

Happy October everyone!

I hope as you read this you're feeling healthy both physically and mentally and finding ways to cope with this most unusual year. I've heard from hundreds of volunteers during this pandemic that making blankets, focusing on what they can do, rather than what they can't, has helped tremendously. I can't express how grateful I am to hear that! I've always said our volunteers and supporters are amazing, and this year has just given them a chance to shine. Thank you All!

We had our biggest month (yet) this year, by donating well over 2,000 blankets. Yay! Since many of your are likely low on materials, it's also a great time to stock up (before the winter) on supplies! Yes, I just gave you permission (not that you need it) to visit your local craft store. Just wear your mask and have your coupons and credit card ready!

If you're in the area of our "headquarters" (my home in Glen Ellyn, IL) feel free to stop by for free yarn and fleece (call ahead for fleece, please). I keep my bench stocked up, 24/7. You may also want to join our Facebook group, since the 2,000+ members, across the country, often alert us to sales!

If you're pressed for time, please don't skip reading the thank you note from Cat Welfare Advocates (first column, at the bottom). The shelter really reinforces our mission and they call our creations, "magic carpets!"

A volunteer in San Antonio commented that she was glad to have found this group and that, "working on this project has been a great way to deal with the stress and anxiety we are all having to deal with right now. It helps keep me focused on positive thoughts and quiets my busy mind." I wish that for myself and every single person reading this newsletter!

Stay stay well, inside & out!

Linda

Direct Shipping Benefits Everyone!

We are now donating well over 1,000 blankets regularly every month, which is awesome! It's also A LOT of blankets to filter in and out of my house every month.

With this in mind, we're asking all out-of-state volunteers to please donate your blankets directly to a shelter right in your own state!

I can help you find a shelter near you, and will do all the work getting them signed up. Or if you choose a shelter from our website list, I can promise you that in-state shipping will be less costly than sending them to me. I do ask though that you let me know....so that I can update my records!

Benefits of donating your blankets locally:

  • Cheaper than shipping them to Illinois (if you're out of state)!
  • You can email them for a tax receipt and possibly write off the donation (please check with your tax professional).
  • You'll also get to hear directly  just how much the shelter staff appreciates the blankets. Thank you!!!

Good news on U.S. shelters!

I am happy to share some good news from Best Friends Magazine's September/October 2020 issue. If you don't already subscribe, you should. It's worth every penny!

The Best Friends Animal Society is working towards a national "no-kill" policy for all US shelters by 2025. That's not too far away! They just reported these great statistics, showing that the US is moving steadily towards that goal!

  • There are now over 2,000 no-kill shelters in the US, up 19% from 2018!
  • A full 44% of US shelters are designated as "no-kill".
  • The number of pets killed annually in US shelters is down 58% since 2016. This is the same year Best Friends began their "no-kill" goal for 2025.
  • A full 69% of pets in shelters are cats, but an increase in TNR (trap, neuter, return) programs is expected to save many more lives.

Let's keep supporting all the great shelters in our program, whether they are able to achieve the no-kill status of not. Every single pet deserves our comfort!

New crochet pattern to try!

Carlene W., one of our volunteers, shared this pattern with us and it's wonderful! It uses a slight modification on a double-crochet, so it's easy to do.

I also liked it because the ribbing shows up on the backside. As you create the blanket you don't see it right away. Once you flip it over, it's adorable. It also adds a nice thickness to the blanket, which pets will love!

Homeless pets on cfc blankets!

some friendly reminders...

Once You Make Blankets...

  • Local volunteers are welcome to drop off their blankets to a shelter near them or to CFC's headquarters in Glen Ellyn, IL. Please leave your name and email on whatever you drop off.
  • If you're outside of our area, please check our "Animal Shelters We Support" page to find a shelter in your state. Then ship your blankets directly to the shelter or drop them off outside their front door. PLEASE let me know how many you donated via email or by using our website form. If you'd like help, signing up a local shelter, please email me!

Please be patient:

  • Keep in mind that CFC is a small organization, with exactly one staff member! I do reply to every email, but it may take me a few days. Thanks!
