Comfort for Critters

~ Celebrating 12 Years & 87,000+ Blankets ~

November 2019 CRITTER NEWS

Last month we started a new "tradition" at CFC, with our first local "Meetup". In total, 18 volunteers joined us at Panera and it was a fun evening of getting to know each other and working on blankets together. We've now secured a meeting room at our local library, and plan to continue to meet once a month! If you're ever in the area of Lisle, IL, you're welcome to join us. Check us out at "" for more info.

If you're interested in forming your own group, I'd suggest you join our Facebook Group ("The Comfort for Critters Team") and post a message to your fellow volunteers. I'm sure there are other people who would love to get together!

As we continue to donate well over 1,500 blankets a month (over 2,000 this month!), we are going through TONS of yarn. My normally yarn-stuffed-attic now only holds a handful of boxes of yarn. So I'll be doing some public relations work this month to get more yarn donated. If you have yarn you're not using (not all our supporters make blankets!) we would love to receive it. You can ship it to headquarters in Glen Ellyn, IL any time and it will be re-bagged for local volunteers to pick up.

November is a great time to say how THANKFUL I am for all the Comfort for Critters volunteers and supporters, who help make our mission a reality each and every month. I never could have imagined, back in 2007, when I dug out my dusty crochet hook to make "a handful of blankets", that such a team would form around me. YOU are truly bringing comfort, support and caring to homeless pets and the lucky animal shelters who get CFC blankets!

Hope you have a joyful Thanksgiving!

a special thank you from "Cat Care society"

"We just received a beautiful assortment of blankets from Peggy B. They have been approved by Nonie, chief blanket inspector at Cat Care Society. We adopt over 400 cats a year to their forever homes with their blankets. Thank you so much, it makes a huge impact on adopters to know that someone cares enough to make a difference in our cats' lives. Purrs!"

The Russian Join

Animal shelters just love colorful blankets, which brighten up the shelter environment. Working with a multitude of colors on a blanket is fun too, except when it comes to weaving in all the ends, created from the color changes! Here’s an easy way to join one color of yarn to the next, creating a nearly invisible blend of the two. Once you get the hang of it, you’ll be switching colors every row!

a special thank you from "a forever home Rescue"

"Those of us at A Forever Home Rescue, in Florida, would like to send a huge THANK YOU to Wendy C., a member of the Comfort for Critters team, for restocking us in adoption blankets! Also, we wanted to send our appreciation to Comfort for Critters, for always helping to get the word out of our needs. The entire group is just amazing and, although it might not get stated enough, are much appreciated for the generous gestures of providing animals an item of comfort and reassurance, as they adjust to their new family and home. Thanks to all of you for doing what you do!"

more Shelter "thank you's" to you. . .

  • "Thank you so much for choosing Little Shelter as the recipient of the beautiful blankets you made. We love them. Most sincerely!" ~ Little Shelter Animal Rescue - Huntington, NY
  • "We have received the blankets, and they are fantastic! They are the perfect size for me to take to events with us in the pop up crates we use! And we do pass along the blankets to our adopters as well. Thank you again for including us in your program!~ Hopeful Tails Animal Rescue - Joliet, IL
  • "I wanted to thank you for making the adorable cat and dog blankets. Every cat and dog that gets adopted goes home with their blanket and it brings joy to the adopters when they receive these blankets made with love. We use the blankets to bring comfort to the cats and dogs of the Wadena County Humane Society. Thank you for your generosity and for your continued support to the animals." ~ Waden County Humane Society - Wadena, MN
  • "Thank you so much, we would absolutely love more blankets! We love sending them home with our kitties. Fred (one of their cats) was with us for months, and when he finally went home he was the first cat to go home with one of your blankets! We send our cats home with a care package of food and a couple toys, so this addition of their soft blanket was perfect! Thank you so much!" ~ Paws & Whiskers Cat Shelter - Toledo, OH
  • "Thank you and your knitters so much for the blankets. Our cats and kittens really appreciate them!" ~ King Street Cats - Alexandria, VA

What CFC Volunteers Have to Say....

I really enjoy reading all the comments left on the website, about why volunteers make blankets! I hope you do too. Here's the latest comments from your fellow CFC supporters!

  • "I have two rescue cats and believe in your mission to provide blankets to cats in shelters. I think they will provide warmth to the metal cage in the shelter and will carry the cat's scent to their forever home." ~ Elizabeth L. of Chevy Chase, MD

  • "I love dogs. I love to knit. This is a glorious way to put the two together. My dog always chooses to sit on a blanket -- something warm and soft. Every animal deserves at least one safe place." ~ Debi R. of Provo, UT

  • "I want to support the needs of animals. I cannot bring any more pets into my home so I want to help in this other way. I think the blankets will give comfort and warmth to the cats and dogs. I love to crochet and when I don't have a personal project it allows me to still do my hobby and help others." ~ Colleen D. in Inver Grove Heights, MN

  • "I'm hoping to bring a smile to some kitties. Wish I could adopt them all! These babies need everything they can get, they especially need a forever home, so please spread the word to adopt!"  ~ Penny E. of Campbellsville, KY

  • "I love to crochet and I was inspired by my late husband to keep crocheting after he was gone. After my husband passed, I adopted a chihuahua. I brought him home and he immediately took over my crocheted blankets, so I decided to crochet for the critters and I happened to come across the CFC website. I think the blankets will give the animals a sense of security and comfort, knowing they have something to call their own when they go into their new home. Every animal needs a little bit of comfort when they transition into a new home. I would just like to say 'thank you' to all the volunteers for all you do!" ~ Kimberly W. of Crystal Lake, IL

  • "I want to help make animals' lives easier, especially during the time while they are waiting to be chosen by a future owner. From the blankets, I hope the pets will find warmth, softness, and a sign that humans care about them, and can be trusted to take good care of them. I am so happy to finally have a local organization that wants, and can use, my handcrafted blankets and beds!" ~ Lynn H. of Hallsville, MO

Direct Shipping Benefits Everyone!

altWe are now donating well over 1,000 blankets (sometimes over 2,000!) regularly every month, which is awesome! It's also A LOT of blankets to filter in and out of my house every month (not to mention all the fleece and yarn donations that go in, and back out!).

With this in mind, please consider donating your blankets directly to a shelter near you. This is especially helpful if you're out of state. Often I receive a box of blankets (with $25 of postage on it!) and I need to turn around and ship it back out (for another $25!), sometimes to the same state it came from!

I can help you find a shelter near you, and will do all the work getting them signed up. If you choose a shelter from our website list, I can promise you that in-state shipping will be less costly than sending them to me!

Benefits of donating your blankets locally and directly:

  • Cheaper than shipping them to Illinois (if you're out of state)!
  • You can ask for a tax receipt and possibly write off the donation (please check with your tax professional).
  • If you personally drop them off, you get to see all those little faces saying "thank you!"
  • You'll also get to see how much the shelter staff appreciates the blankets!

If this doesn't work for you PLEASE continue to send me your blankets, and I will happily ship them out!  Thank you!

together we have donated 87,083  blankets!

What is “The Blessing of the Animals”?

I was fortunate enough to be invited to a blessing of the animals at a friend’s church, a few years ago. Though a lifelong Christian, I had never even heard of this ceremony, which in itself is wonderfully simple.
