Comfort for Critters

~ Celebrating 12 Years & 74,000+ Blankets ~

march 2019 CRITTER NEWS ~ welcome spring!

Is it spring yet? As winter loosens its grip, I'm thankful that spring will arrive, eventually! As we all look forward to warmer weather, the shelters have started contacting me about the upcoming "Kitten Season". This season begins in March, and lasts through the summer. I've been trying my best to ship out each and every blanket I receive, in order to stock up these shelters for the kittens which will be arriving. Thank you to all our volunteers for helping by making blankets!!

I also owe a thank you to over 800 crafters who have joined our new Facebook Group, the "Comfort for Critters Team." It's turning out to be a great resource for everyone to share patterns, pictures of their blankets and announcements of yarn sales! There are files included in this group for members to use to get yarn donations, approach their local shelter about participating in our program and even new patterns to try. I hope you will check it out!

I continue to receive boxes and boxes of blankets at our home-base in Glen Ellyn, IL and I'm grateful for every blanket. If you do ship a box, please include your name and address on the inside of the box. Often the return address is illegible due to rain, snow, sleet, or all three! I thank you if you've decided to ship your blankets directly to a shelter in your state. That is very helpful! Please note that I've updated the list of shelters on our website, with a label which indicates if a shelter only helps cats, dogs, ferrets, etc. If there's no notation, then they help all domestic pets. There's also a handful of shelters, which can only use fleece blankets. You'll see this notated as well.

I'm continuing to add fun t-shirt designs to Amazon, hoping to raise funds to "keep us going, and keep us shipping". Please check them out and maybe treat yourself? They are reasonably priced, and ship for free if you're an Amazon Prime member. It took a while for Amazon to approve CFC as a vendor, so I'm grateful to be able to try this out over the next few months!

As always, your comments, concerns and suggestions are always welcomed.Thank you for whatever you do to support our mission of comforting all the homeless pets we can't adopt. I hope you know how grateful I am, and how aware I am, that I couldn't do it without YOU!

       With gratitude,

    Linda

a special thank you from W.O.W.!

altalt"Thank you so very much for the kitty blankets! They LOVE them! This is Sunshine! She has been at the shelter since September 11, 2017. She came in with two little, 6 week old kittens. They are all grown up now and she and her boys are still here. She has come a long way! She was very, very shy and her boys were wild little things. Now they all want attention and love. We have over 140 cats and kittens at the moment and are so very thankful for the blankets!"

"I wanted to email to thank you for the BEAUTIFUL blankets from Comfort for Critters. Our animals are already enjoying them. Attached is a picture of one of our newest residents, Daisy. Daisy came in and hadn't been groomed in so many years that her fur wasn't even matted anymore, it was in locks that reached past the floor. The soft blanket provided by your organization helps her sensitive skin feel better! Also...I'm wondering where you purchased the yarn. All the women at the shelter are in LOVE with the colors! Thank you again!"

"Thank you so much for the handmade blankets you sent to our shelter for our cats and dogs. They absolutely love them! They love to snuggle on them and keep warm on these especially chilly days. Direct Shipping Benefits Everyone!

altWe are now donating over 1,000 blankets regularly every month, which is awesome! It's also A LOT of blankets to filter in and out of my house every month (not to mention all the fleece and yarn donations that go in, and back out!).

With this in mind, please consider donating your blankets directly to a shelter near you. This is especially helpful if you're out of state. Often I receive a box of blankets (with $25 of postage on it!) and I need to turn around and ship it back out (for another $25!), sometimes to the same state it came from!

I can help you find a shelter near you, and will do all the work getting them signed up. If you choose a shelter from our website list, I can promise you that in-state shipping will be less costly than sending them to me!

Benefits of donating your blankets locally and directly:

  • Cheaper than shipping them to Illinois (if you're out of state)!
  • You can ask for a tax receipt and possibly write off the donation (please check with your tax professional).
  • If you personally drop them off, you get to see all those little faces saying "thank you!"
  • You'll also get to see how much the shelter staff appreciates the blankets!

If this doesn't work for you PLEASE continue to send me your blankets, and I will happily ship them out!  Thank you!

What CFC Volunteers Have to Say....

I'm thrilled with how our Facebook Group has taken off, so that volunteers can finally "meet" and get to know other volunteers. Another way to get to know each other, is from the comments supporters leave on the website. Here's just a sampling...

  • "My dog Lily had hemangiosarcoma and died a little over 4 months ago. Today would have been Lily's 10th birthday, so today I'm donating 10 handmade blankets to shelter animals in her honor. I know the shelter is very thankful to receive handmade blankets, they were extremely grateful last time I donated to them and they said it's wonderful that they can send a blanket with the animal to their forever home when they get adopted. Thank you for allowing me the opportunity to do something productive with my grief! I miss my dog very much and I'm grateful to be able to channel my sadness into something that helps homeless animals." ~ Jamie L.
  • "I saw the article in Woman's World and thought it was a great idea to help shelter animals. My mom crocheted and taught me. When she passed away, I got totes full of yarn! This drop off was the second time I dropped off colorful, crocheted blankets. The woman recognized me and she said she puts the colorful ones in with the kitties to draw the people's eyes to the kitties. She sent them home with the kitties that bonded with their blankets. Thanks for all the help you're giving homeless animals!" ~ Cookie K. in Sinnamahoning, PA
  • "I had a bunch of scrap yarn that didn't work for my usual crochet projects, so instead of getting rid of it, I used it for pets. Oh, and I love animals!!! I'm hoping the blankets will give some comfort while the babies are waiting for their forever home. I started doing this to use my scraps, but now I'm telling everyone to clean out their yarn stash for me!" ~ Rita M. in Mt. Morris, MI
  • "I want every cat and dog waiting for a home to know they are special, worthy and loved. I hope the blankets will be soft and comforting, because I can't cuddle them all! I love this charity. It gives me purpose."  ~ Catherine J. in Mays Landing, NJ
  • "We work very closely with our local shelter, so rescue animals are very dear to us. Pets are just like children, they all have a special blanket. The blankets bring comfort! I think this is a great thing. Thank you for organizing it."  ~ Miranda B. in West Plains, MO

Adding "puffs" to your blankets

alt

A handful of our volunteers make astounding blankets which have “puff patterns” in them. They use a solid color yarn and then add 3D outlines of cats, hearts, paw prints and more. The images you can add are limitless!

As with so many of the blankets I receive for distribution, I’ve always been jealous of how beautiful they were. So I set out to crack the code and figure out just how these volunteers do what they do. Of course, it simply meant figuring out the stitch they were using, but I’m still thrilled to bring you the answer!

A few friendly reminders...

  • Once you have some blankets made, please check  our "Shelters Supported" page to find a shelter near you (or at least in your state). Feel free to ship your blankets directly to the shelter, or drop them off, and just let me know how many you donated. Don't forget to ask for a tax receipt, since many of the shelters can provide this!

  • Don’t forget to leave your name and address on the blankets or materials you drop off at CFC headquarters in Glen Ellyn, IL so that I can send you a thank you note.

  • Remember that we are all juggling CFC, jobs and kids! I do reply to every inquiry, but it may take me a day or two. Thanks for your patience!
