Comfort for Critters

~ Celebrating 12 Years & 79,000+ Blankets ~

WOW, we had an amazing month in May! Because of all your work, your support, and your caring we made 2,402 homeless pets a bit more comfy during the month. Yep, this is a new record in monthly shipments! More importantly, these pets now know that they are NOT forgotten and ARE loved! I can't imagine anything more rewarding than that. I have a feeling you agree!

I hope everyone enjoys a fun and restful summer. Our numbers typically drop a bit, which is to be expected. We all have to balance our volunteer work with our work-work, and our relaxation! I love that CFC can be something volunteers do when they have time, and then take a break when they need to. We'll be here whenever it's time to jump back in!

I get a lot of questions asking if shelters even need blankets during the summer. Yes, they certainly do! The shelters are typically air conditioned and the enclosures are still hard, so the pets really do appreciate something soft to snuggle in and on.

I also want to thank everyone who has decided to ship their blankets directly to a shelter. Since we donated over 2,400 blankets just this month, that would be an insurmountable postage bill for me! I'm focusing on the blankets that are dropped off to me from local volunteers (which is a lot, since we started in this area) and getting those shipped out. It's great that volunteers in other states are now sending their blankets to shelters in their own state. It's actually cheaper for everyone!

I'm trying to create more patterns for volunteers to try and share more of the thank you notes I receive. I do most of this on social media, so if you haven't "Liked Us" on Facebook or Instagram, you may want reconsider. I want everyone that helps in any way to know the difference they are making. Thank you ALL so much!!!

Blessings from Linda!

a special thank you from Cat Welfare Advocates

"Thank you so much for the stunningly beautiful, handmade blankets that we received at Cat Welfare Advocates. You guys are awesome! As you can see, the blankets passed inspection.

We distribute the blankets to kittens in foster homes and as each kitten gets adopted, his or her blankie goes with the cat to the cat's new family. The blankets bring the cats comfort and they look so adorable on or under them. The blankets soften the hard look of the cages that we use to house the kittens at adoption fairs. The colorful blankets really are an important marketing asset; it is easier for potential adopters to imagine the kitten in their own home. Thank you all for your gifts!"

Amazing Fibromyalgia Dogs

Service dogs are showing up in more places and helping a wider array of individuals. A recent study at the Pittsburgh pain clinic investigated the use of service dogs to help patients suffering from Fibromyalgia.

According to Dr. Dawn Marcus, “Overall, pain severity was significantly reduced after a brief therapy dog visit.” Over one-third of the patients improved, versus only 4% in the control group. Dr. Marcus went on to list that all symptoms of the disease were helped, including fatigue, stress level, calmness and cheerfulness, not just pain. In addition, dogs can provide these patients with a sense of grounding when they are caught in “fibrofog.”

Other research has also shown “wide-ranging biochemical and physiological effects for those suffering from Fibromyalgia.” Not surprisingly, the more time spent with the dog, the more improvement the patients made.

While many service dogs are larger breeds, this therapy uses smaller breeds to relieve Fibromyalgia symptoms. The Xoloitzcuintli (pictured, “Xolo” for short), or Mexican Hairless dog, generates a lot of heat (to make up for no hair!) and can be trained to lie next to a person in pain. It can also be taught to wrap itself around the neck of a person in chronic back pain. These dogs are truly “a gift” for those with Fibromyalgia.

Your Beautiful Creations!

More shelters needed!

I'm adding new shelters to our program every week, but there are still a handful of states where we really need more shelters. If you know of any great rescue groups, foster-care systems or stand-alone animal shelters in these states, please email me at I'll reach out to them and see if they're interested in joining our free program. Thank you!

Shelter Thank You's...

"Thank you, Comfort for Critters, for the package that arrived today at the Jackson County Animal Shelter. So many lovely handmade blankets for the pets to cuddle and enjoy! What a nice surprise! Everyone was admiring the combination of colors, and the lobby cat, Belinda, picked out the purple and turquoise one right away! What a nice thing for you to do for pets in shelters all over the country!"           ~ Jackson County Animal Shelter

"Thank you so much for the handmade blankets! We are overwhelmed by your generosity!!! The animals here at Stray Rescue will love them. Thank you again!!" ~ Stray Rescue of St. Louis

"Paw Patrol Dayton wants to thank you so much for your thoughtfulness! The blankets you made will go to foster dogs and then to their new families!" ~ Paw Patrol Dayton

Direct Shipping Benefits Everyone!

We are now donating almost 2,000 blankets regularly every month (over 2,000 this month!),which is awesome! It's also A LOT of blankets to filter in and out of my modest home every month (not to mention all the fleece and yarn donations that go in, and back out!).

With this in mind, please consider donating your blankets directly to a shelter near you. This is especially helpful if you're out of state. Often I receive a box of blankets (with $25 of postage on it!) and I need to turn around and ship it back out (for another $25!), sometimes to the same state it came from!

I can help you find a shelter near you, and will do all the work getting them signed up. If you choose a shelter from our website list, I can promise you that in-state shipping will be less costly than sending them to me!

Benefits of donating your blankets locally:

  • Cheaper than shipping them to Illinois (if you're out of state)!
  • You can ask for a tax receipt and possibly write off the donation (please check with your tax professional).
  • If you personally drop them off, you get to see all those little faces saying "thank you!"
  • You'll also get to see how much the shelter staff appreciates the blankets!

If this doesn't work for you PLEASE continue to send me your blankets, and I will happily ship them out!  Thank you!

Support Our Mission!

We rely on the generosity of animal lovers to keep us going and keep us shipping! We donate 1,000 - 2,000 FREE blankets to animal shelters each month!

All our merchandise is personally made, or designed, by Linda, CFC's founder. She offers a handful of blankets for purchase and has designed some one-of-a-kind t-shirts!

What our Volunteers Have to Say....

I'm convinced CFC is "staffed" by some of the best people around. If you haven't joined our Facebook Group yet, I encourage you to do so. It's a great group of people helping people, who are helping pets. We'll welcome you in! Here's a sampling of why some of your fellow volunteers make blankets and work to comfort pets.

  • "I make blankets because I know the blankets are helping shelter animals be cozy while they're waiting for their forever homes, and it also helps me have a productive outlet to get through the grief of losing my pets to cancer. I made 50 blankets in 2018 and hope to make even more in 2019 to donate to shelter animals! I also hope to get another dog and cat this year!" ~ Jamie L. in WI
  • "I think the blankets will keep them warm. Even something to play with and give them a small sense of security." ~ Michael A. in Boston, MA
  • "Making blankets is a great way to pass the long winter! I think they will comfort the pets when they are in unfamiliar places. Thank you for this program!"  ~ Janell M. in Grand Forks, ND
  • "I make blankets because I love the thought of a kitty sleeping on something super soft and being able to snuggle. I used a chenille Bernat yarn, which I know they love." ~ Marie C. in Lexington, KY
  • "We are a group of women that have worked together for up to 30 years. We love our pets with all our hearts and wanted to help a shelter. We put a lot of love into these blankets and hope the animals will find comfort on a soft, cozy blanket. We loved your mission and wanted to give some support. Thank you for being so wonderful!" ~ Rose Ann P. & friends in Roseville, MI
  • "I get the newsletter and finally said, 'I'm making blankets!!' I think the blankets will help by being warm, cuddly, bright and cheery! It made me so happy to make these blankets, that I signed up to volunteer at the Dane County Humane Society as a feline friend." ~ Pat S. in Monona, WI

A few friendly reminders...

Once you have some blankets made, please check our "Shelters Supported" page to find a shelter near you (or at least one in your state). Feel free to ship your blankets directly to them, or drop them off. The shelters do not notify me when they receive blankets, so please let me know via our website form or in an email.

Don’t forget to leave your name and address on the blankets or materials you drop-off at CFC headquarters in Glen Ellyn, IL so that I can send a thank you note!

Remember that we are all juggling CFC, jobs, pets and kids! We do reply to every inquiry, but it may take a few days. Thanks for your patience!
