Homeless pets on cfc blankets!

december blanket donations

2,332 Blankets

94 Shelters

31 States

  • We helped over two thousand pets in December by donating a total of 2,332 blankets!
  • 94 different shelters, in 31 states received our blankets, and most received a handful of toys as well!
  • These blessings were only possible, due to the 100+ volunteers and supporters who helped. Thank you!

Thank you from safe haven!

"Thanks for the blanket drop off today. The timing was excellent as we were starting to run out. Petey (above) came up with a rear leg that was almost perpendicular to what it should have been. The left socket was completely out and couldn't be popped in. So it was amputated and he is now charging around like a mad man. Artie (below) had been hit by a car. The right front leg was broken badly, couldn't be saved and it had to be amputated. He is now also charging around. Tripod dogs always have such great personalities. I think they feel so good to be pain free that they don't miss the leg!

Thanks again for the snuggles. My small guy really loves when blankets arrive. Because transports have to be done outside, due to Covid, I individually bag each blanket so they don't get wet if it's a bad weather day waiting for the fosters to pick up as part of their foster kit for each foster dog. My guy Junior sits on the blanket pile as I bag each snuggle. He doesn't give them up easily."

Shelter "thank you's" ...

  • "Thank you for your donation of beautiful resting blankets for our kitties at PAWSGH. We love them all." ~ PAWS of Grays Harbor in Aberdeen, WA
  • "The box arrived today. A big thanks to all the wonderful volunteers who make these. The last box went fast. One foster who was adopting to a family that already had cats gave her one to use for a few days so her cats scent could get on it and she returned it so the foster, who was going there, could get use to the cat this way. It will be going home with the kitten in a few weeks. We usually have at least 30 or more kittens each month. These are just so nice to use when they are with us and to send home with them when they go to forever homes. Your kindness is greatly appreciated." ~ Feral Kitty Trappers in MI
  • "We would like to take this opportunity to express our gratitude for your thoughtfulness in donating handmade cat beds to comfort our cats. Much like you, all the staff members here at MCSPCA love animals too. Because of your kindness, we are able to show cats entrusted to us a little bit of extra comfort and care, as they await adoption to a new and loving home. We also send each cat home with their special blanket/bed. On behalf of everyone here at the MCSPCA, thank you!" ~ Montgomery County SPCA in Conshohocken, PA
  • "The blankets are beautiful. Our cats and kittens will love them and so will their new parents!" ~ ARF-IL in Lisle, IL

January 2022 ~ Critter News

134,529 blankets donated so far ...

Happy New Year!

Happy New Year everyone! 2021 will be remembered by me as yet another "interesting" year. I'm embracing this coming year with a renewed attitude that truly takes things a day at a time, and seeks out the joy that hides in the little things we encounter each day. I consider our little blankets to be creations of beauty, love and yes, joy.

Together we spread a lot of this joy in 2021, in a world that can never have enough of it. We surpassed the 20,000 blankets we donated last year (in the middle of a pandemic!) to donate almost 24,000 this year. YOU all are amazing! Check out what we achieved in 2021, despite many challenges, setbacks and obstacles!

~ 23,900 blankets donated ~

~ 400 shelters supported ~

~ Made possible by 729 volunteers ~

January will be spent updating files, lists and doing lots of paperwork. For this reason (and because we're stocked up) I'm asking everyone to pause sending any yarn or fleece donations. You'll see this noted elsewhere on this website as well.

I'm also finally releasing my second book, "Crochet for Your Comfort". I learned a lot as I heard from volunteers and supporters, and as I researched the various ways that crafting can help our mental health. I know it's saved mine in the past year more than once!

Wishing you peace, love and more pets in 2022,

Linda

Pets you are helping!

New e-book with new patterns!

I'm so excited to announce that this e-book is finally done and available! During 2020 and 2021 I was inundated with emails from volunteers, explaining how crafting our blankets was helping them during the current crisis.

New volunteers were also joining the team and reaching out to me. They explained that doing something to add a bit of kindness to the world, and to keep their mind off the news, was really helping them as well.

Throughout all of this I felt compelled to document how crafting can help the physical and mental health of the crafter. I've seen this in myself and was clearly hearing this from others. I hope you will give it a read and will feel encouraged to continue your own crafting to benefit others, but also yourself!

Note: All proceeds of this e-book keep CFC going and keep CFC shipping our free blankets. If the price is a burden to you, please email me at Linda@Comfortforcritters.org and I will happily send you a free copy.

Why we help shelter pets...

These comments will likely sound very familiar. They recap why your fellow volunteers love helping shelter pets and participate in the CFC program!

  • "Crocheting for rescues is my way to give back to the beautiful Westie puppy mill mama we adopted and lost way too soon. She's forever in our hearts." ~ Geni O. of Channahon, IL
  • "I look at my pet and how good he has it and all the blankets and soft things he has to lay on and think about all those who don't have that same privilege and want to share a little bit of love." ~ LaVerna S. in Lincoln, NE

  • "I love animals and making a dog or cat in a shelter more comfortable and giving them something of their own is very rewarding." ~ Barbara B. of Madisonville, TN

  • "I enjoy knitting and crocheting and am actively involved in cat rescue in my area. In this time of uncertainty, this is an activity that for certain is so needed and rewarding." ~ Sharon S. of Gainesville, FL

  • "I love adding a little comfort and a lot of love for these sweet little souls! We all 'Do small things with great love', and together, we can make a difference." ~ Peggy B. of Aberdeen, WA

can dogs "catch" our yawning?

We’ve always heard that yawning is contagious. You see someone do it, and it’s hard to resist it yourself. Does this hold true for man (or woman’s) best friend? Can our pooches “catch” yawning from us?

A new study published in Animal Contagion, says that we can pass our yawn to our pet dog. They studied 29 dogs who were subjected to the sound of a yawn from their owners, a stranger and “control sounds” (the sound of a yawn played in reverse!)...all while their owners were out of sight. The dogs were found to be four times more likely to yawn after hearing their owner’s yawn, rather than the yawn (or other sound) of a stranger!

It just illustrates that when pets join our lives, they really join in every aspect of who we are. While they are always lucky to be adopted, we are the lucky ones in the end!

spread the word & join the fun!

If you'd like to keep up to date on our mission, follow us on Facebook! We also have a Facebook Group, "The Comfort for Critters Team", where we share what we're working on, pet and craft humor, and tip & tricks for making beautiful blankets. It's a private group that stays 100% positive, 100% of the time! Please consider joining us!

Once you make blankets:

  • Local volunteers are welcome to drop off their blankets to a shelter near them or to CFC's headquarters in Glen Ellyn, IL. Please leave your name and email on whatever you drop off, so that I can send a thank you note.
  • If you're outside our area, please check our "Animal Shelters We Support" page to find a shelter in your state. Then ship your blankets directly to the shelter or drop them off outside their front door. PLEASE let me know how many you donated via email or by using our website form. If you'd like help, signing up a local shelter, please email me!

Please be patient:

  • Keep in mind that CFC is a small organization, with just one staff member! I do reply to every email, but it may take me a few days. Thanks!

Direct Shipping Benefits Everyone!

We are now donating 1,500-2,000 blankets regularly every month, which is awesome! It's also A LOT of blankets to filter in and out of my house every month

With this in mind, we're asking all out-of-state volunteers to please donate your blankets directly to a shelter right in your own state!

I can help you find a shelter near you, and will do all the work getting them signed up. If you choose a shelter from our website list, I can promise you that in-state shipping will be less costly than sending them to me. I do ask though that you let me know....so that I can update my records!

Benefits of donating your blankets locally:

  • Cheaper than shipping them to Illinois (if you're out of state)!
  • You can email them for a tax receipt and possibly write off the donation (please check with your tax professional).
  • You'll also get to hear just how much the shelter staff appreciates the blankets. Thank you!!!
