thank you from good mews!

"Cotton and his friends want to thank Comfort for Critters for making these gorgeous blankets for them! The blankets are sent home with the adopted kitties, so they have something to comfort them while they transition into their new home! Thank you for thinking of our cats and kittens!"

January 2020 ~ Critter News

2019 Year in review!!!

2019 was truly an excellent year for Comfort for Critters AND for homeless pets. Together we found the time to give back, help others and comfort pets in need of families. We told all these "little lives" that they ARE loved and are NOT forgotten.

One of my favorite quotes, by Margaret Mead, really captures the year for me. Please know that whatever you did to help, did change the world in a positive way!

Here are the amazing things we accomplished together in 2019:

  • 20,237 free blankets given to animal shelters. WOW!
  • Shelters in every single US state, plus Canada, were supported!
  • 357 different shelters received our free blankets, with many also receiving pet toys, notes of encouragement and angels!

Of course none of this would have been possible without these great people:

  • 473 volunteers crafted handmade blankets during the year.
  • 185 other volunteers helped with blanket drop-offs, postage, yarn, fleece, stamps, and even finding us a place to meet locally!

Thank you to everyone for making 2019 happen!

Happy 2020 everyone!    Linda

Your Beautiful Creations!

Homeless pets on cfc blankets!

Why we help shelter pets....

I hope you enjoy kicking off the new year with these comments from your fellow blanket-makers. I'm sure their sentiments will sound familiar to you...

  • "I make blankets because it empowers me. Though I can't save/adopt all of the homeless animals out there, I can give them a little love and comfort. I'm hoping they help make the cats stand out and keep them feeling warm and fuzzy. I needed this organization! It gives me purpose, direction and hope." ~ Catherine J. of Mays Landing, NJ

  • "I love animals and hate to see them suffer. I have 4 rescues of my own. I just want to help animals have a better life, in a way that I can. I am hoping the blankets will give the fur babies a safe place to go to. Something to bring them comfort and warmth. I crocheted a catnip toy for each blanket, so the kittens that get them have a toy! Thank you for all you do to run this organization. CFC is amazing!" ~ Linda S. of Levittown, PA

  • "Like a lot of people, I can't have a pet where I live, so I do the next best thing in caring for one, by making blankets! I think the blankets will help their physical comfort: warmth and the mattress-like buffer between crate and animal. Since my shelter is a new CDC-supported cat shelter, I see my blankets as a 'Welcome to the Family' statement!" ~ Michael A. of Boston, MA

  • "I make blankets to share the feeling of comfort and love to all critters. It's the thought and love put in the blankets, not how many a person can donate or the crafty way they are created. I just hope they will comfort the animals and let them know someone does care and they aren't alone."  ~ Tonia D. of Staples, MN

  • "I've adopted two furry girls the past five years and understand the importance of providing comfort, stability and love to these dogs. One furry girl loves to hunker down in her blanket when it's storming. Both girls use them to nest in and as a pillow. I'm sure neither of them slept on anything soft before they became part of our family. Thank you so much for your hard work in providing love to fur babies in need." ~ Geni O. of Channahon, IL

  • "Shelters can be sad places for animals, so any comfort I can give them is good. I think the blankets will give them something cushy and soft to sleep on. And hopefully they can feel the added love. I am so grateful to be a part of this group!" ~ Everly K. of Garfield Heights, OH

Pets you are helping!

secondhand hounds gets first hand help!

Check out the smiling faces and beautiful blankets made by this group at the Allstate Staff Counsel Office in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Seven of them got together and decided to celebrate the holidays with a group charity project. Among the many options they had, they chose Comfort for Critters, and I was thrilled!

One of the lawyers had already worked with a local shelter, Secondhand Hounds, so it was easy to sign them up. They were super-excited to join our program and loved the idea of using the blankets in their foster-care system. As with all the shelters we support, they promised to send the blankets home when their kitties find a forever family.

This group of volunteers created soft and colorful tied-fleece blankets, just perfect to comfort a homeless pet. As you can see from the pictures, the patterns and bright colors are simply adorable. In total, 15 blankets were donated to Secondhand Hounds, in Minnetonka, Minnesota.

The shelter was sweet enough to immediately send a note of thanks: "With temps near zero here, all our fosters LOVE the snuggly blankets!! Perfect timing! Thank you so very, very much!"

A big thank you goes to Linda S. who reached out to me and did all the coordination. She also plans to spread the word to other Allstate offices, which may want to help in her area. We are always grateful for wonderful people who spread our mission to others. Thank you!!

cfc meetups in 2020!

After many years of volunteering together, we finally started "getting together" once a month via the app Meetup, late in 2019. It's been fun to get to know each other and share our passion for crafting and pets. We'll continue this new tradition in 2020, meeting once a month at the Lisle Library in Lisle, IL.

Our next Meetup will be on Monday, January 13th at 7p (or whenever you can make it). If you're in the area, please stop by and say hi! We'd love to include you in our group! Join us on the Meetup app, and you'll get notifications on all our get-togethers!

Choosing a veterinarian

Helping our pets to have the best life possible, often means teaming up with a great veterinarian.

Finding the perfect match goes a bit further though if you want to help not just your pet, but all those you can’t adopt (but would like to!).        Read more here!

probiotics with fur

Did you take your probiotics this morning? If your dog woke you up with a "kiss", you just may have! Researchers at the University of Arizona think dogs have a probiotic effect on the gut bacteria of their companions...and that's a great thing!  (Read more here)

Direct Shipping Benefits Everyone!

We are now donating well over 1,500 blankets (sometimes over 2,000) regularly every month, which is awesome! It's also A LOT of blankets to filter in and out of my house every month (not to mention all the fleece and yarn donations that go in, and back out!)

With this in mind, we're asking all out-of-state volunteers to please donate your blankets directly to a shelter right in your own state!

I can help you find a shelter near you, and will do all the work getting them signed up. If you choose a shelter from our website list, I can promise you that in-state shipping will be less costly than sending them to me. I do ask though that you let me know....so that I can update my records!

Benefits of donating your blankets locally:

  • Cheaper than shipping them to Illinois (if you're out of state)!
  • You can ask for a tax receipt and possibly write off the donation (please check with your tax professional).
  • If you personally drop them off, you get to see all those little faces saying "thank you!"
  • You'll also get to see how much the shelter staff appreciates the blankets.

Thank you!!!

some friendly reminders...

Once you make blankets:

  • Local volunteers are welcome to drop off their blankets to a shelter near them or to CFC's headquarters in Glen Ellyn, IL. Please leave your name and email on whatever you drop off!
  • If you're outside our area, please check our "Animal Shelters We Support" page to find a shelter in your state. Then ship your blankets directly to the shelter (or drop them off), asking them for a tax receipt, if this is needed. Finally, let me know how many you donated via email or by using our website form. If you'd like help, signing up a local shelter, please email me!

Please be patient:

  • Keep in mind that CFC is a small non-profit, with exactly one staff member! I do reply to every email, but it may take me a few days. Thanks!
