Comfort for Critters

~ Celebrating 12 Years & 72,000+ Blankets ~

February 2019 CRITTER NEWS

Despite the record-setting cold, January was another great month for CFC. We continue to donate well over 1,000 blankets a month, which even has me amazed! We continue to expand, adding new volunteers, new shelters and new ways to help comfort homeless pets.

altLast month we also launched our Facebook group, the "Comfort for Critters Team". There's a link to join this group in this issue, if you haven't already received an invitation. It's a great place to ask questions, share ideas and even supplies. I wish I could spend more time hanging out in the group, but I do my best to add resources and input. I'm thrilled that I see so many volunteers helping and encouraging other volunteers!

One member of that group, Danelle Nolan, is a gifted graphic artist and has created some items for volunteers to post on their own social media accounts. These are designed to help spread the word on our mission and to get much-needed supplies (yarn and fleece) sent to individual volunteers directly. A big "thank you" is due to Danelle for all her work. All these items are saved as files in the Facebook Group page.

I've also put together an information sheet, individual volunteers can use if they'd like to approach their local shelter directly. I will still plan to follow up with the shelter, but it's a good place to start! You can download this flyer here, and use it with this graphic (from Danelle), if you like! All these resources will always be available on the "How to Volunteer" page of this website.

alt

As a final note, I now have long-sleeve shirts and sweatshirts, ready to order, with our logo and some other fun graphics. CFC gets about $5 for every shirt we sell, so please consider making a purchase to keep us going and keep us shipping blankets!

I have lots more planned for this year and will keep posting on Facebook and Instagram. It's a great way for CFC volunteers and supporters to keep in touch. So stop in when you get a chance!

Thankful for you!

Linda

"We would like to give a huge thank you to Comfort for Critters, for sending us toys and blankets for our foster cats and dogs! This photo shows one of our fosters' resident cats checking out the merchandise! As you can see, he gives them two paws up! The dogs love the toys and the kittens love these blankets, which we send home with them when they get adopted. Thank you, Comfort for Critters, for your kindness to rescue groups like ours!"

"Thank you" gift to you...

altIf you receive a thank you card from me, there's a new "surprise" you may also receive. It's a miniature granny square, created by Melissa M. of Pfafftown, NC. This is completely her idea, her words and her generous heart. I'm just grateful that she's sharing her time with CFC!

The card reads:

I was just a little bit of yarn, as plain as plain could be,

Until someone took a crochet hook and made a square out of me.

So tuck me in your pocket and if you’re feeling blue,

Give me a squeeze and know, that homeless pets are grateful for you.

We are such a lucky team to have people like Melissa and people like YOU helping. Thank you!!!

Temperature blankets!

altAs a fun project last month I made my first "Temperature Blanket" and invited the "Comfort for Critters Team" on Facebook to join me. This is the resulting blanket (finished LATE last night!), which is a great size for a pet.

Every row's color represents the "high" temperature for the day. January started with a touch of green (45-59 degrees) but ended well in the black (under 10 degrees)! Thank you, Polar Vortex!

This idea can be done any month, and results in a pet-sized blanket. Click here for the pattern, if you'd like to give it a try!

New "cuddle mat" pattern!

Thanks to Carlene W., one of our fabulous volunteers, we have a brand new crochet pattern to share. It's super easy to do and I really liked the results. I will surely be making more "cuddle mats" for shelter pets. Thank you Carlene!

If there's a great pattern you like to use, feel free to share it on our Facebook Group, "Comfort for Critters Team"!

Shelter Thank You's...

alt"Thank you for honoring us and making us wonderful blankets for the animals in our care. Your kindness and generosity makes a huge difference to the animals in our care. Thank you for caring about animals!" ~ Dane County Humane Society

"On behalf of the animals here at the Wisconsin Humane Society, we would like to thank you for your contribution of yarn blankets. Your donation will help us care for the needy animals that we serve each year. We are truly touched by your kindness and your generosity is greatly appreciated." Wisconsin Humane Society

"On behalf of the Auburn Valley Humane Society, I would like to thank you for your generous donation of cat beds and fleece blankets. Because of your donation, we will be able to comfort more lives. You are making a tremendous difference!" Auburn Valley Humane Society

"The latest blankets that were brought to us a week ago are beautiful. The cats love them - and the little toys are a joy for our cats!!!!! Thank you so much." ~ Humane Haven Animal Shelter

"We received your box of beautiful blankets today! Thank you so much for thinking of us! We are truly grateful for your donations. Gorgeous blankets!!" ~ Animal Welfare League

What CFC Volunteers Have to Say....

altThank you for these inspiring comments, left on our website. They keep me going, when I'm super-tired at the end of a long day, and I hope they will motivate you as well!

  • "All of my dogs have been rescues. Most recently (13 years ago) Callie was scooped out of a kill shelter and became a vital member of our family. I am so grateful. Every rescue needs love. I think these blankets absolutely offer comfort now and during their transition to a permanent home." ~ Debby K in MD
  • "A couple of our sorority sisters (chapter Xi Lambda Tau) made, and are donating, the blankets as a service project. One of our members received a CFC blanket when she gave a home to two kittens! The cats loved them. It makes the change easier on them. All nine of us have a dog or cat. We just know how much they love to cuddle." ~ Sandra K. in Willowbrook, IL
  • "I have a soft spot in my heart for all animals and I'm thankful to CFC for enabling us to be able to provide some comfort to the poor babies waiting in shelters for their forever homes. There have been many studies done about black cats and dogs and how it takes longer for them to be adopted. I love to use bright cheerful colors in hopes that when they see the animals wrapped in these blankets, they truly see how sweet they are, and their adoption rate increases. I can't imagine life without the Chocolate Lab we adopted from a rescue group, and prior to him we loved our Black Lab who came from the SPCA." ~ Bonnie H. in Nazareth, PA
  • "I was looking for a way to practice my crochet and making blankets for shelter cats kept me inspired and motivated! I hope the cats will find comfort in the blankets, especially once they move to their forever homes."  ~ Patty R. in Fort Edward, NY

Direct Shipping Benefits Everyone!

altWe are now donating over 1,000 blankets regularly every month, which is awesome! It's also A LOT of blankets to filter in and out of my house every month (not to mention all the fleece and yarn donations that go in, and back out!).

With this in mind, please consider donating your blankets directly to a shelter near you. This is especially helpful if you're out of state. Often I receive a box of blankets (with $25 of postage on it!) and I need to turn around and ship it back out (for another $25!), sometimes to the same state it came from!

I can help you find a shelter near you, and will do all the work getting them signed up. If you choose a shelter from our website list, I can promise you that in-state shipping will be less costly than sending them to me!

Benefits of donating your blankets locally and directly:

  • Cheaper than shipping them to Illinois (if you're out of state)!
  • You can ask for a tax receipt and possibly write off the donation (please check with your tax professional).
  • If you personally drop them off, you get to see all those little faces saying "thank you!"
  • You'll also get to see how much the shelter staff appreciates the blankets!

If this doesn't work for you PLEASE continue to send me your blankets, and I will happily ship them out!  Thank you!

Together we have shipped 71,472 blankets!

A few friendly reminders...

Once you have some blankets made, please check our "Shelters Supported" page to find a shelter near you (or at least one in your state). Feel free to ship your blankets directly to them, or drop them off. The shelters do not notify me when they receive blankets, so please let me know via our website form or in an email.

Don’t forget to leave your name and address on the blankets or materials you drop-off at CFC headquarters in Glen Ellyn, IL so that I can send a thank you note!

Remember that we are all juggling CFC, jobs, pets and kids! We do reply to every inquiry, but it may take a day or two. Thanks for your patience!
