"These photos show kitties (Serena shown above, Lily and Lola shown below) who have all been adopted and headed home with one of your blankets."

"Mr. Mike (shown below) is a cuddly guy who has been with us since he was a tiny kitten and has yet to find himself a home. His day will come! He's loving shelter life as you see him rolling over on his blanket.

Mike is also enrolled in the Jackson Galaxy Cat Pawsitive Program where he is learning high fives, nose touch and other things to help him find a home of his own."

Thank you again for all you do!"

Why we help shelter pets....

If you're helping us in any way, you're on a great team. All the "thank you's" and all the "pictures" in this newsletter are only possible because of this strong group.

Please enjoy these heartfelt comments from your teammates:

  • "I make blankets so that each kitty adopted goes home with their own blanket that they use in foster care! I found an ad on Facebook and messaged the lady that offered a huge amount of ready made squares and yarn for free. When I said what I do with the materials we was very happy to deliver to me! She loves the idea of what we do! This made her feel real good, knowing what she wasn't going to use was going to do good! We all pay it forward!" ~ Suzanne B. of Burlington, VT

  • "I love cats and have rescued 3 over the years. Cats don't like change! So having a blanket that is theirs to take with them to their furr-ever home will make the transition easier. It is a great feeling, helping animals. God tells us that we are to care for His creatures, and I feel blessed being able to do so." ~ Lorleen F. of Nanaimo, BC in Canada

  • "I knit and crochet for pleasure. I like cats. It was all a perfect fit! I think a warm, soft blanky to sit/lie on is better than the alternative!" ~ Lu E. of Nanaimo, BC in Canada

  • "The blankets provide a much needed link between shelter life and their forever home. If I can help the animals to have a more stress-free transition to their new home, I am happy. I think you folks are doing great work. They say animals are angels on earth! I believe that."  ~ Linda E. of Norwich, NY

  • "I have 2 rescue cats and 1 dog and can't adopt anymore. I make blankets to comfort the ones I cannot bring home. I love to crochet and I love animals, so putting the two together is perfect. Thank you for starting Comfort for Critters. I tell all my crafty friends about this organization so they can join the fun."  Dana A. of Midlothian, TX

  • "I enjoy crocheting and experimenting with different patterns in my spare time. This is a great way to improve my skills and share my creations where they'll be appreciated by furry friends. The familiar feel and smell of a special blanket will help each shelter animal adjust more comfortably to their new home." ~ Lauren J. of Conroe, TX

  • "I just love animals and wish I could save them all and give them the loving home they deserve. I already have a dog and 2 cats and cannot take in any more currently, and I also have limited time, but I love to crochet. When I found this organization I was so elated because it paired 2 of my favorite things. I think the idea of sending something familiar to a forever home will help with the transition so much. I also hope that it sends a message to those running the shelters that there are folks out there who care, even if they can't participate directly." ~ Melanie C. of Chicago, IL

some friendly reminders...

Once You Make Blankets...

  • Local volunteers are welcome to drop off their blankets to a shelter near them or to CFC's headquarters in Glen Ellyn, IL. Please leave your name and email on whatever you drop off.
  • If you're outside of our area, please check our "Animal Shelters We Support" page to find a shelter in your state. Then ship your blankets directly to the shelter or drop them off outside their front door. PLEASE let me know how many you donated via email or by using our website form. If you'd like help, signing up a local shelter, please email me!

Please be patient:

  • Keep in mind that CFC is a small organization, with exactly one staff member! I do reply to every email, but it may take me a few days. Thanks!

August 2020 ~ Critter News

Happy august everyone!

As another month begins, I remain grateful that CFC has stayed on track this year and is able to continue helping pets, despite the world changing around us! Of course none of that "help" would happen without our volunteers and supporters....so thank you!

Together we achieved a major milestone in July, which if you follow us on social media you already saw. Together we have donated over 100,000 blankets and helped 100,000 pets! Thank you to every volunteer and every supporter!

If you didn't hear the news, it's a great reminder to follow us on social media. In this era of social distancing, I'm trying to post more "thank you's" from shelters, more ideas for blankets and more cute photographs of pets enjoying your creations. I'm hoping that dropping in on our Facebook group is a bright spot in your day!

To further help with our "new normal" I hope you'll check out the list of book recommendations in this newsletter. I'm an avid reader, and loved them all. I'm also happy to report that I'm stocked up with yarn (and even have some fleece) now at our home base in Glen Ellyn, Illinois. So feel free to stop by 24/7 and grab a bag or two. As always, if there's any information you need or any way I can help, please email me at info@ComfortForCritters.org!!!

Stay in & stay well!

Linda

How to make the ultimate cat toy!

Decades ago (literally) I volunteered at my local shelter and learned how to make this cat toy which is LOVED by shelter kitties. Every time I showed up for my shift at the "cat house" I brought handfuls of these along. No wonder I was so popular with the cats and kittens! They are super-easy to make for your own cat, or to include with blankets you drop off!

Steps:

  • Find some extra fabric, thin enough to be gathered together. Cut it into 10" x 10" squares. A little smaller, or larger, is fine too.
  • Place a tablespoon of catnip in the center of the fabric and add a small handful of "filler". For filler, I use extra small bits of fabric, fleece or even a torn up plastic grocery bag.
  • Gather each corner together and form a "bundle" around the catnip/filler. Wrap a piece of thick yarn around the top of the bundled area and tie it into some tight knots (I knot it twice).
  • Trim the fabric along the top, to make it nice and even.

Your Beautiful Creations!

Homeless pets on cfc blankets!

Pets you are helping!

Shelter "thank you's" for you!

"Comfort for Critters is a huge supporter of ours and provides blankets for all of our kitties when they head to their forever homes. We want to say a huge congratulations on this fantastic milestone (100K donated) for such a wonderful organization! Thank you for all your support over the years!"            ~ Facebook post by ADOPT Pet Shelter in Naperville, IL

"We were thrilled to receive blankets! We love that we can send each adopted dog home with their own blanket! Our adopters love it more than we do, I think! Thanks so much for sharing with us." ~ Hopeful Tails Animal Rescue - Joliet, IL

"Thank you for the donated blankets. We can tell that they are made with so much care and love and our animals certainly appreciate them. The Comfort for Critters blankets are used in our cat go home carriers and they certainly go a long way in providing comfort for the shelter cats as they get their freedom ride home."  ~ DuPage County Animal Shelter - Wheaton, IL

"I wanted to send along our thank you message for the blankets we received. I was hoping to snap a photo of our kitties enjoying the blankets, but they found their new humans too quickly (never a bad thing, of course!) and took their blankets with them to their new homes. Thank you so much for the wonderful blankets! Your donation provided warmth and comfort to cats and kittens who need it the most, and helped make their stay with us at the rescue meow-y comfortable. We are incredibly grateful for your support and compassion, and we know if the rescue kitties could talk, they would thank you too!" ~ Seattle Area Feline Rescue - Seattle, WA

"Please thank your hard working volunteers for us! We love getting the blankets! I do know that our kitties love them and we are so happy that you chose our organization to help! Thank you so much!" ~ Boone County Animal Care - Columbia, MO

Linda's blog...

Spring and Summer can be wonderful times of renewal. Plants which have withered to nothingness, burst forth with life and beauty. There’s nothing like it, and it makes enduring a Midwest winter almost worth it. Almost.

One delight, which makes the high temperatures bearable is the return of the butterflies. With all their wonderful colors they are tiny masterpieces, flitting through the yard. Caring for these creatures can be fun, and attracting them to your garden takes just a few steps. But first, let’s get to know our friends, the butterflies, a bit more.  Read more here

Direct Shipping Benefits Everyone!

We are now donating well over 1,000 blankets regularly every month, which is awesome! It's also A LOT of blankets to filter in and out of my house every month.

With this in mind, we're asking all out-of-state volunteers to please donate your blankets directly to a shelter right in your own state!

I can help you find a shelter near you, and will do all the work getting them signed up. Or if you choose a shelter from our website list, I can promise you that in-state shipping will be less costly than sending them to me. I do ask though that you let me know....so that I can update my records!

Benefits of donating your blankets locally:

  • Cheaper than shipping them to Illinois (if you're out of state)!
  • You can email them for a tax receipt and possibly write off the donation (please check with your tax professional).
  • You'll also get to hear directly  just how much the shelter staff appreciates the blankets. Thank you!!!
