Comfort for Critters

~ Celebrating 12 Years & 80,000+ Blankets ~

august 2019 CRITTER NEWS!

I continue to be impressed by all the work done by CFC volunteers. With the heat of the summer, hectic schedules and more....everyone continues to find the time to help homeless pets. In July alone we donated over 1,600 blankets, which still amazes me. The graphic at right is for all of you....thank you!

I've been working on some new patterns and new hand-out materials. Be sure to check out my blog which has suggestions on how you can "adopt" your local shelter and materials to help you do just that!

I've also put together a new memo (below) you can use when you ship or drop off blankets to a shelter. You can download the file here. I hope it helps remind the shelters of our program and encourage them to send a thank you note to you.

I have many more things planned for August, including a drawing for a "craft kit" for everyone that helps us in any way! I'm also working on releasing more patterns and support materials for volunteers. Until then, just stay tuned via our social media....as we finish the summer strong for homeless pets!

Blessings from Linda!

a special thank you from the Pulaski COunty H.s.

"We are very appreciative of your donated blankets. We always send our foster babies home with their favorite one. I'm enclosing a couple photographs, showing our foster babies tucked in with their favorite CFC blanket. Thank you!"

Your Beautiful Creations!

Fun facts on the pet industry

I really enjoy reading updated statistics on the pet industry. I try to keep track of trends, to see how they may impact our mission. There are two main sources of pet demographics, the American Pet Products Association (APPA) and the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). The APPA produces the National Pet Owners Survey every other year, and the AVMA generates a report every five years. Both are very interesting to read, though I've only seen bits and pieces since they are very expensive to purchase!

As I reviewed the most recent statistics I was thrilled to see that the trends really are towards rescuing pets and away from purchasing them from pet stores! There's also a movement away from using breeders, and towards rescue groups, though I know there are some really great breeders out there!

For 2018, the APPA reports that there are 84.6 million US households with pets (or 68%). That's a huge number of families with pets! Rural states tend to have more pets, with the highest rate of households with pets going to Wyoming (72%). Urban states have fewer pet households, with the lowest being Rhode Island at 45%. In total, estimates tell us that there are 184 million cats and dogs, living as pets in the US. Keep in mind, that's just cats and dogs! Here are a few other interesting facts:

  • 60 million households have a dog, 47 million have a cat.
  • 90 million pet dogs and 94 million cats live in the US.
  • Of the households with dogs: 50% have small dogs, 28% have medium dogs, 35% have large dogs.
  • On average, households with cats have two kitties.

Now for the really great news! The percentage of dogs which were adopted from a shelter or rescue is up from 35% in 2013, to 37% in 2016, to 44% in 2018!! Cats adopted from a shelter or rescue group also rose from 43% in 2013, to 46% in 2016, to 47% in the 2018 survey!

As you might suspect, dogs purchased from pet stores fell from from 5% (2013) to 4% in 2016 and has remained at 4%. Cats purchased from pet stores also dropped from 2% in 2016 to only 1% in 2018! Even breeder sales of dogs dropped from 34% in 2016, to 25% in 2018. The only statistic that rose was breeder sales of cats. 3% of cats were purchased from a breeder in 2016, but that increased just a bit to 4% in 2018.

So it looks like we'll be making blankets for many years to come...but it does look like the "adopt, don't shop" message is getting out there! Thank you to every CFC volunteer and supporter for making these pets a bit more comfy in the shelters!!

Shelter Thank You's...

"Thank you so much! These beds are fantastic! So cozy and such beautiful colors. Our kitties, young and old, will truly appreciate these wonderful gifts." ~ Feline Friends

"Thank you so much for the kind donation. The blankets are beautiful! We just received a litter of nine puppies. I put together a 'doggie bag' for when our pups get adopted. Your pretty blankets which they are using, will also go into these bags. Thank you." ~ Treasured Animal Rescue

"Thank you for the lovely bedding that you have been providing for the ferrets at the Greater Chicago Ferret Association! It is nice to have them in their cages and also we do send it home with the ferrets when they are adopted. Thank you for what you do and your love of animals in shelters needing some comfort!" ~ Greater Chicago Ferret Association

"We are grateful for your donation of handcrafted blankets. These will go far in providing comfort to the dogs and cats that call Animal Care Sanctuary home. The blankets will also serve them when they are adopted into their fur-ever home, since they will take along something familiar to allow them to adjust and feel safe as they get to know their new surroundings.~ Animal Care Sanctuary

"On behalf of the Board of Directors and staff at the Lowell Humane Society, I want to write and thank you for your generous donation of blankets and dog toys! Your kindness is greatly appreciated! Thank you for your support!" ~ Lowell Humane Society

"We have received your blankets! Our kitties love them. We use them in the shelter and we send them home with the adopted cats so they have something to comfort them while they transition into their new home. We love receiving these blankets from you, and we would love to continue to get them! Thank you for thinking of our kitties!" ~ Good Mews Animal Foundation

"Thank you for your kind donation to CVHS of handmade blankets. Your support helps to further our mission of providing the best quality care and shelter to animals in need. Your thoughtfulness and belief in our mission is truly an inspiration. Thank you for your support!" ~ Cocheco Valley Humane Society

Direct Shipping Benefits Everyone!

We are now donating over 1,000 blankets regularly every month, which is awesome! It's also A LOT of blankets to filter in and out of my modest home every month (not to mention all the fleece and yarn donations that go in, and back out!).

With this in mind, please consider donating your blankets directly to a shelter near you. This is especially helpful if you're out of state. Often I receive a box of blankets (with $25 of postage on it!) and I need to turn around and ship it back out (for another $25!), sometimes to the same state it came from!

I can help you find a shelter near you, and will do all the work getting them signed up. If you choose a shelter from our website list, I can promise you that in-state shipping will be less costly than sending them to me!

Benefits of donating your blankets locally:

  • Cheaper than shipping them to Illinois (if you're out of state)!
  • You can ask for a tax receipt and possibly write off the donation (please check with your tax professional).
  • If you personally drop them off, you get to see all those little faces saying "thank you!"
  • You'll also get to see how much the shelter staff appreciates the blankets!

If this doesn't work for you PLEASE continue to send me your blankets, and I will happily ship them out!  Thank you!

a special thank you from chenango spca

"We so appreciate what you and your volunteers do for so many animals. We tried something new when the box arrived. It didn't work out as I hoped, but it was a lot of fun. We thought we'd let the cats pick their own blanket!

They were like kids in a candy shop, rolling on them all, crawling underneath and a few took a nap! Kiwi (bottom right picture) wanted them all. Emily (bottom left) thought hers was a tutu! Little Rosemary (left) needed a partial tail amputation and was able to come back to the shelter to recover on a very soft blanket of her own. Thank you all for being who you are, the world is a better place because of you!"

A few friendly reminders...

Once you have some blankets made, please check our "Shelters Supported" page to find a shelter near you (or at least one in your state). Feel free to ship your blankets directly to them, or drop them off. The shelters do not notify me when they receive blankets, so please let me know via our website form or in an email.

Don’t forget to leave your name and address on the blankets or materials you drop-off at CFC headquarters in Glen Ellyn, IL so that I can send a thank you note!

Remember that we are all juggling CFC, jobs, pets and kids! We do reply to every inquiry, but it may take a few days. Thanks for your patience!

New crochet  pattern to try!

I just love granny squares, since they are so traditional and it was the first pattern I learned as a young girl from my mother. Making them always brings back great memories of my mom!

So I was thrilled to try this "Granny in the Round" pattern. It's colorful and easy! I hope you enjoy it as well!

What CFC Volunteers Have to Say....

Here are just a few of the great comments left on our website, and some of the great reasons that super-busy people take the time to help homeless pets!

  • "I made these blankets for cats because I'm unable to personally adopt a cat, so this is my way of helping them. I think the blankets will help because now the pets have something familiar to call their own that goes with them wherever they go!" ~ Kelsey D. in Midland, MI
  • "My feral cats love to sleep on the blankets (on my heated porch). The Animal Protective League lets me know when they have received my blankets. I am grateful for this and that they will take any that I may send them. They make me feel needed and it helps my hands stay flexible. I am grateful that there is an organization that helps all types of animals." ~ Paula R. in Arcola, IL
  • "My blankets to the Fort Myers shelter were greatly appreciated and they were well in need of the supplies I brought. I think the blankets will comfort the animals in the shelter and when they go to their forever home. When I went in a few days later, most of the blankets had already been put to use. Keep up the great work! Every little thing you do counts and matters!"  ~ Anne S. in Ontario, Canada
  • "I make 'cat mats', which my own cats sleep on. I want every cat to be warm and comfortable on them. I think the blankets help because cats like surfaces that are soft and easy to curl up on. These mats afford them that." ~ Sharon S. in Gainesville, FL
  • "I adopted my dearly departed cat, Koko, from a shelter in 2010...and she adored her crocheted blanket. She passed away last year, and I started making blankets for other shelter pets in her memory. I think the blankets will provide tons of comfort during a stressful time, and help ease a pet's transition into a forever home! Thanks so much for all the incredible and inspiring work you do!!" ~ Maddie in Shoreline, WA
  • "I love animals and I hope with every blanket, their stay at the shelter is a bit cozier, and more pleasant. Reading about the importance of the pet having something familiar with them when going to their forever home prompted me to work on these blankets tirelessly. This is an amazing initiative, I love the idea tremendously." ~ Andreea T. in Ontario, Canada
