Comfort for Critters

Celebrating 10 Years~Helping our pets & all those we can't adopt!

September 2017 ~ CRITTER NEWS!

August started a bit quiet, after our recording-breaking July (almost 1,200 blankets shipped), but it sure didn't end that way. As Hurricane Harvey, and the resulting flooding, devastated parts of Texas & Louisiana, my email filled up with people wanting to help. As we all donate money to NPOs in the region and send supplies to the now-homeless families, CFC has it's own way of assisting this area, and that's with blankets & toys for pets.

I've contacted all the shelters we support in Texas and Louisiana and I'm gathering information on how we can best assist their work. Many are receiving displaced pets from the Houston area (strays or from flooded Houston area shelters). I'll be working over the next few days to ship out blankets and toys to these shelters. I was blessed with some huge blanket donations at the very end of the month (God's timing is always remarkable), so I'll be able to ship a couple hundred blankets (at least) in the first week of this month!

Blankets won't solve all the issues facing these families, but helping comfort pets they may have lost and showing our support for the area, is the help we can offer. Teddy Roosevelt told his fellow Americans to "Do what you can, with what you have, where you are." So that's what we'll do. I'm just the one packing boxes and loading the mail truck. YOU have provided these blankets, or other valuable support, so THANK YOU for making these shipments possible!

                                                                                                     Happy September,

                                              Linda

Thank you for caring a whole awful lot!

HABRI - An organization you should know!

HABRI stands for Human Animal Bond Research Institute and it’s one of my favorite websites to check out when I have a bit of extra time for reading. They are a non-profit research and education organization that shares, and often funds, scientific research which shows the positive impact pets have on our lives. Both physically and emotionally, our companion animals often help us, as much as we help them!

This group is a great resource for easy to digest research on everything from pets helping kids with reading, to pets actually preventing allergies in children.  In a recent study they shared, the research strongly indicated that individuals with ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder) are greatly helped by interacting with companion animals.

They cite one study which shows AAI (animal-assisted intervention) for children with ASD was effective in increasing both social functioning and safety. Children with ASD showed increased social awareness, interaction, motivation and better all-around social skills and behaviors, when they experienced animal-assisted intervention.

Another study found that when these children were in the presence of companion animals, they talked more, made more physical contact and more eye contact. They were also more receptive to socializing with their peers.

A separate, HABRI-funded, study looked specifically at the effects of pet dogs on families with children who have ASD. The results showed “significantly improved family functioning of families with a dog, compared to those without.”  The dysfunctional interactions between family members were also reduced. This study backs up previous research, which has shown that the introduction of assistance dogs to a family decreases problematic behavior, cuts stress for the parent, and gives the child an increased sense of security and independence.

Studies such as these, and organizations such as HABRI, can really promote the positive impact of pets on all our lives. This can only lead to better treatment of companion animals by our society and more recognition for all they quietly do, to improve our lives.

Thank you Dorothy!

These pictures are just a sampling of the stunning thank you cards I recently received from Dorothy L. of Hamburg, NY. Dorothy has been "working" hard for CFC since she saw an article about us a few years ago in Woman's World magazine. Since early 2014 she has made almost 1,300 blankets for us and has even shipped them to shelters!!

She has also made countless pet toys, which she also sends to shelters, and lots of "goodies" which she sends to me. These goodies include the 130 beautifully handmade cards AND handmade envelopes I just received. They are such a treat to use, since each one is completely unique! So as you receive these thank you cards from me, please know that it's Dorothy's creativity that makes me look good. She's a great example of the volunteers that help out CFC. Thank you Dorothy, and thank you to everyone that makes each month, each blanket possible!

Shelter "thank you's" . . .

  • "Thank you for the donation of tie and crocheted blankets for the dogs and cats at Prairie Paws. Our foster pets use these blankets in the foster homes and the blankets are sent with them when adopted. This helps with the transition as a familiar scented blanket goes with them. Thank you!" ~ Prairie Paws Rescue in Jamestown, MD

What CFC Volunteers Have to Say....

Thank you so much for all the comments I've been receiving on our website. I read, and enjoy, each and every one! They keep me going, when I'm running low on energy and I hope the will energize you as well. Here's just a sampling....

  • "I just wish I could adopt more pets, but I can't, so I make blankets!" ~ Connie M. of Pine Ridge, FL
  • "I'm making blankets to provide comfort and a special personal item for a kitty. I hope they will provide a sense of security." ~ Anastasia J. of Chicago, IL
  • "Over the years, we've adopted several four-legged family members from shelters and acquired a few others from re-homing situations. Words cannot express the joy that they have brought us over the years, so this is just a small way to show our gratitude for their love and companionship. I hope the blankets will help because every animal should have basic comfort, including a warm place to rest. I hope these will bring a small measure of comfort and love to animals waiting to find their forever homes."  ~ Elizabeth B. of Urbana, IL
  • "We have adopted many and want to make the ones in the shelter more comfortable while they wait for their forever homes. I think they will help by giving them something besides the kennel floor to lay on. A bit of comfort!" ~ Ina S. of Mountain Home, ID

Monthly Blessings...

  • We comforted hundreds of homeless pets in August, by donating 804 blankets during the month.
  • 44 different shelters, in 24 states, received our blankets, and most received a handful of toys as well.
  • These blessings were only possible, due to the 80 volunteers who helped last month. Thank you!

Thank you Lion Brand Yarn!

Lion Brand Yarns is truly one of my favorite yarns to work with (especially their Homespun line). I'm happy to report that they were nice enough to cover us in their blog at the end of August.

I've received many inquiries from this coverage, so I'm confident we'll be adding volunteers and comforting even more pets. Thank you Lion Brand Yarns!

Understanding T-N-R

The issue of pet overpopulation is not just visible in the hundreds of animal shelters across the US, but also in the millions of community cats which live short lives in this country. CFC blankets are only provided to animal shelters and foster care systems, but understanding TNR programs (a close cousin to the shelter system) can allow us to help these other homeless cats in our community.

A few friendly reminders...

  • Once you have some blankets made, please check  our "Shelters Supported" page to find a shelter near you (or at least in your state). Feel free to ship your blankets directly to the shelter, or drop them off, and just let me know how many you donated.

  • Don’t forget to leave your name and address on the blankets or materials you drop-off at CFC headquarters in Glen Ellyn, so that I can send you a thank you note.

  •  Remember that we are all juggling CFC, jobs and kids! We do reply to every inquiry, but it may take a day or two. Thanks for your patience!
