Comfort for Critters

~ Celebrating 11 Years & 67,000+ Blankets ~

november 2018 ~ CRITTER NEWS!

October was another amazing month, here at CFC "headquarters"! We were super-busy breaking just about every record we ever set! Together we comforted 1,913 pets - breaking our previous record of 1,807 for monthly blanket donations! These blankets went to 83 different shelters, another record! It's simply amazing what a group of dedicated people can do.

Speaking of groups, be sure to check out our new "Great Project for Groups" page. If you're in a group or know someone who is (Scouts, Bible studies, neighborhood organizations, etc.) this page has some great resources!

I love November, because it gives me a chance to say, once again, how thankful I am for everyone that makes CFC the awesome organization that it has grown up to be. Whether you make the blankets, donates supplies, or have paid for one of the many boxes I ship each month, this Thanksgiving, I give thanks for you!

Because of YOU…

… an animal shelter will look bright and cheery!

… a homeless pet will have something comfy to cuddle in the shelter, when they visit the vet, or meet new families.

… an adoptive family will know their little one was loved, while they waited, as they see them on a handcrafted blanket.

… a newly adopted pet will have something familiar to them, as they travel home with their forever family.

... a shelter worker will feel valued and appreciated as they admire your creations.

… a shelter will spend more on food and medicine, and less on bedding.

… a CFC volunteer will receive free yarn, fleece and other supplies. For some this is such a blessing!

… other volunteers will be able to help pets without the expense of shipping, knowing their creations will always find their way to an animal shelter in need.

… a family will have a treasured keepsake, long after they have said goodbye to their beloved pet.

Thank you for not just thinking "someone should help these poor pets", but taking the steps, making the sacrifices and doing the work to improve your corner of the world!

May your Thanksgiving be filled with whatever fills your heart!

Your Beautiful Creations!

a special thank you from Chenango SPca!

             Bruce                                 Gussie                                Jasper                         Salsa

"As you can see, our cats are enjoying their new blankets. They always seem to love these new blankets so much more than they do a towel or rug to sleep on. They start our slowly sniffing it and then climbing on it, and some like Bruce will wear it on his back. You and your volunteers are amazing for thinking of our animal's needs. Something like this goes a long way in their lives.

Salsa came in a litter of 6, was sick and VERY small compared to the others. She has more than made up for that. She has a VERY large personality. Gussie is a bit laid back, enjoys tummy rubs and napping in our sculpture room with 17 other cats. Bruce, well Bruce is a large teddy bear, loves to head butt and give a gentle high five when you close up his cage. We're hopeful that we have a family coming in to adopt him this weekend. Jasper has a family coming tomorrow to visit and possibly adopt him. I haven't told him yet, don't want to get his hopes up. He is what I call the perfect young man. Happy to be picked up, but ok to sit at your feet. Loves attention but isn't pushy about it. Very clean and gives hugs!

Thank you from the bottom of my heart."

Maxwell Pepperoni - A kitty you should know!

Amy Dobyns of Springfield, Ohio began volunteering for CFC this fall, and we're so lucky to have her helping! She's made lots of blankets and has sent them directly to a variety of shelters she's chosen to support. As I communicated with Amy, she introduced me to Maxwell Pepperoni, a rescue kitty she adopted from the Capital Area Humane Society.

Maxwell Pepperoni has become a therapy cat through Miami Valley Pet Therapy Association. Along with Amy, he visits hospice, nursing homes, and hopes to do a reading program at the local library very soon. Amy was kind enough to relay a story to me about how their visits make such a difference. When Maxwell visits a typical nursing home, the residents are able to connect with him, as they fondly remember the pets they have loved. However, during a visit with Dementia patients, it was much more difficult for them to make this

connection. At times, not even recognizing Maxwell as a cat, but thinking he was another, more alarming, pet.

The next time Maxwell came to visit, Amy tried focusing more on the handmade blankets which lined his stroller. "I showed them the quilt I made for him, and the blankets my mom crocheted," explains Amy. This formed the connection she was looking for, as the residents talked about how they loved to sew, or saw a blanket similar to one they used to enjoy. Amy sums it up, "it was neat how we didn't make the connection at first with the cat, but that a blanket, quilt, or something handmade was able to bridge the gap and make that connection!" Very neat indeed.

Amy has been enjoying creating blankets, and loves to pick out animal-themed fleece, or super-cute patterns. She correctly feels that these bright colors, and cut patterns, will bring a little extra attention to the pet who gets to enjoy the blanket. A little extra attention is sometimes all that's needed for a family to find, and bond with, their new family member!

You can follow Amy & Maxwell's "adventures in helping" by following Maxwell's Facebook page at He even has business cards, stickers, and an adorable flyer that's included with the blankets which are donated to shelters. The flyer is from Maxwell, and explains how much he loves blankets, and how the enclosed blankets are for the pets to enjoy as they wait for their forever families. I'm thrilled to welcome Amy, and Maxwell Pepperoni, to the CFC team of volunteers...each making a difference right where they are!

Games to play with kitty!

There’s nothing more fun than hanging out and playing with your kitty! Kittens demand this, but older cats can sometimes get forgotten. No more! Here are some fun ideas for ways to play with your kitty, of any age.

Elastic is your best friend! Tie one of your cat’s favorite toys to the end of short piece of stretchy elastic and tie the other end to a door knob. Make sure you don’t make it too long. You want the toy to dangle, but not drag on the ground. It’s also necessary to do this in an area where you can supervise the little one. You don’t want them getting all tangled up!

Bells are great too! Tucking a jingly bell into a larger ball or any round object will make a great toy for your kitty. The sound will attract them from across the house as you roll it across the floor or bounce it down stairs.

Rotate!  Rather than putting out every toy, put most of them away and just bring out a few at time. Tuck them into spots where your cat hangs out, but may not expect to see a toy. Rotate them occasionally, to keep them interested.

Simple objects can entertain! There are many commercial cat toys on the market, but sometimes it’s the homemade items that are the most fun.

  • A rolled up ball of foil can entertain kitties for hours.
  • When you’re unpacking the groceries, toss a few of the plastic grocery bags on the ground to get their attention (be sure to supervise).
  • Almost any box will be of interest to your cat. Be sure to leave an open end facing sideways for easy access. It’ll be their personal hide-out!

After playtime…  Once kitty is tired out, nothing will be better for them than a scratching post, cat-hammock or your lap. Be sure to allow them to stretch out and take a nice long nap!

Help needed!

We are now donating over 1,000 blankets regularly every month, which is awesome! It's also A LOT of blankets to filter in and out of my house every month (not to mention all the fleece and yarn donations that go in, and back out!).

With this in mind, please consider donating your blankets directly to a shelter near you. This is especially helpful if you're out of state. Often I receive a box of blankets (with $25 of postage on it!) and I need to turn around and ship it back out (for another $25!), sometimes to the same state it came from!

I can help you find a shelter near you, and will do all the work getting then signed up. If you choose a shelter from our website list, I can promise you that in-state shipping will be less costly than sending them to me.

Benefits to donating your blankets locally and directly:

  • Cheaper than shipping them to Illinois (if you're out of state)!
  • You can ask for a tax receipt and possibly write off the donation (please check with your tax professional).
  • If you personally drop them off, you get to see all those little faces saying "thank you!"
  • You'll also get to see how much the staff appreciates the blankets!

If this doesn't work for you PLEASE continue to send me your blankets, and I will happily ship them out!  I get shipments every day, so this doesn't need to entirely stop....even a few less boxes will help a lot. Thank you for giving it some thought!

What CFC Volunteers Have to Say....

Thank you to everyone who leaves comments on the website. I just love hearing how you're enjoying our mission! Here's the latest group of comments from your fellow-volunteers, supporters and fiber-artists:

  • "I wanted to help the animals because I love animals, especially dogs. I think the blankets will help because it can comfort the homeless pets and when they are adopted, they can keep the blanket and it will be something that always comforts them!" ~ Ally M. of Upland, CA
  • "I have rescued two dogs and I would like to do something for the rescue animals looking for homes. I remember when I adopted each of my dogs and how scared they were when I went to meet them. I think back to how they may have acted differently if they had had a comfort item in their crate, because rarely do either of them want to sit or lay somewhere that isn't soft! Thank you for starting this non-profit. It makes me happy that I was able to make fur babies in need something that will give them comfort and peace." ~ Alissa G of Tomball, TX
  • "I make blankets since I love animals...and what a wonderful way to use scrap yarn. I hope the blankets will bring them comfort and warmth. I plan to be a regular donor. This is a great idea!" ~ Marion A. of Nassau, NY
  • "I have been taking care of feral cats for  a number of years now. I have two of my own, plus one outdoor cat, that likes to be outside instead of indoors. I want the animals to be adopted, but they need something of their own and these blankets are it!"  ~ Paula R. of Arcola, IL

A few friendly reminders...

  • Once you have some blankets made, please check  our "Shelters Supported" page to find a shelter near you (or at least in your state). Feel free to ship your blankets directly to the shelter, or drop them off, and just let me know how many you donated. Don't forget to ask for a tax receipt, since many of the shelters can provide this!

  • Don’t forget to leave your name and address on the blankets or materials you drop off at CFC headquarters in Glen Ellyn, IL so that I can send you a thank you note.

  • Remember that we are all juggling CFC, jobs and kids! I do reply to every inquiry, but it may take me a day or two. Thanks for your patience!
