Comfort for Critters

~ Celebrating 10 Years & 50,000 Blankets ~

January 2018 ~ CRITTER NEWS!

HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYONE! As I write this, the temperature outside is struggling to get above zero degrees in the Chicago area, which of course means it's a great time for crafting! I can tell that the rest of the volunteers agree, since I was bombarded (in a good way) with blankets during December! I decided to give a few days off to my wonderful postal carrier, so I know exactly how I will be spending the first week in January... shipping tons of blankets! Thank you to everyone for making those blankets and making those shipments possible!

In 2017 we did some amazing things together. We helped to comfort 11,778 pets, up from a bit over 8,000 in 2016. In total, we've comforted almost 52,000 homeless pets. CFC volunteers never let me down and continue to impress me! Juggling jobs, kids, employment changes, health issues, and more....you still find the time to reach out to others. Thank you!

2018 is starting out with a bang....with some great press in Glancer Magazine (regional publication covering the Chicagoland area). I'm very thankful to the writer who contacted me and was patient as I explained our mission. You can read the article by clicking on the picture at right.

This local coverage is sure to bring in many more volunteers in the Chicagoland area, so I will be receiving many, many more blankets! I have a feeling it's going to be another year of us breaking records together!

Be sure to check out this entire issue, which includes a new pattern to try, a new pet (maybe) to try and a new "challenge" for you in 2018. You'll also read how US pets are being comforted via CFC all the way from Saudi Arabia. Happy reading!

May 2018 be filled with family, friends, and furry critters!

                   Linda

Comfort from Saudi Arabia!

We recently received some adorable blankets, from a very special group of girls. These are Girl Scouts of the USA, overseas in Dhahran, Saudi Arabia. As Tarynne (pictured above) was working on her Gold Award project for Girl Scouts (involving pets), her younger sister was working on her Silver Award, knitting blankets for orphans in Africa with the rest of her troop. They decided to help out Tarynne on her project, and make blankets and toys (shown below) for shelter pets!

Tarynne's project also included promoting the adoption of pets from shelters, rather than shopping, and covering the horrors of puppy mills. She also created an educational website (www.a1petpalooza.weebly.com/) and a Facebook page. Two different shelters in the US will receive these special blankets, cute toys and a whole bunch of love from these talented and caring girls!

Our amazon & Etsy Blankets Make Great Gifts!

Here's an easy way to help us ship blankets and find a great gift for the animal-lover in your life.

Purchase one of our exclusive "Remnants Reborn" blankets, which are made by Linda, CFC's founder, using only remnant yarn, leftover after making shelter blankets. They are sold on Amazon and Etsy at a price that covers the shipment of a box of blankets. The recipient will receive a beautiful blanket and learn that a big box of blankets is being shipped to an animal shelter because

of the purchase! This card is included with their gift blanket:

A beautiful blanket PLUS sponsoring a shipment of blankets, equals a meaningful gift for any pet lover!

What CFC Volunteers Have to Say....

Thank you for all the great comments left of the website. I read each one and I'm thrilled to work alongside such a great group of volunteers. Here's just a sampling of why other volunteers enjoy helping us, help homeless pets!

  • "I love animals and I need to keep my hands busy. I recently retired and was looking for a way to spend my time. Your organization fit the bill. Now I can sit with my 2 Chihuahua mix puppies in my lap, crochet, and help other animals. It makes me feel good....and they love it too! I hope the blankets will keep the puppies warm and make their transition to their forever home easier." ~ Stevie of Portland, TX
  • "I've always enjoyed making things, and yarn finds me! It's a good way to use up a lot of it quickly, and I love animals. I hope the blankets will bring some comfort to the animals and brighten the day of anyone who sees them." ~ Lori H. of Shepherd, MI
  • "I started making blankets after my beloved rescue cat, Koko, passed away. She loved her handmade blanket so much! It inspired me to learn to crochet so I could help other pets in need of comfort. I hope the blankets help by comforting scared pets in their greatest time of need, and providing a familiar object to take with them to their new home."  ~ Maddie B. of Seattle, WA

December Blessings...

1,083 Blankets

54 Shelters

18 States

105 Volunteers

  • We comforted over a thousand homeless pets in December, by donating 1,083 blankets!
  • 54 different shelters, in 18 states (plus Ontario, Canada), received our blankets, and most received a handful of toys as well.
  • These blessings were only possible, due to the 105 volunteers and supporters who helped last month. Thank you!

Rats Make great pets ... really!

Take the Remnant Challenge!

This idea was suggested by Kate H. of Port Washington, NY. She joined the CFC team in September of this year and hasn't missed a month making blankets! Kate purchased a box of yarn remnants on eBay and challenged herself  to make as many blankets from them as possible. She was able to create 18 blankets (pictured above) and comfort 18 homeless pets with that one box of remnants!

Her next challenge is in the form of a bag of yarn remnants she purchased at a local thrift store. I'm sure she'll again make some beauties!

Volunteers in the area of Glen Ellyn, IL are always welcome to stop by and grab a couple bags of yarn (24/7) from the storage bench outside my front door. I encourage other volunteers to ask family and friends, check out eBay or their own local thrift store for some great bargains....and take the Remnant Challenge!

Thank you Kate!
