Comfort for Critters

~ Celebrating 10 Years & 50,000 Blankets ~

December 2017 CRITTER NEWS!

I can hardly believe I'm writing this, but together we reached our goal of helping 50,000 homeless pets! We've kept all those pets warm, comfy and sent them a clear message that they are NOT forgotten. "Thank you volunteers" just doesn't seem enough!!

We also broke yet another record with our November blanket deliveries! Together we donated 1,319 blankets, with the help of 86 volunteers and supporters! That's over 100 more than our last record of 1,215 blankets in one month.

To cap off an excellent month, we received some great press coverage during the final days of November. On November 29th the local NBC station in Chicago covered Comfort for Critters in their 4:00pm newscast, sending out a message about what we're doing and that we need more yarn (we always do!). I missed the coverage, and only found out when my phone started ringing and ringing!

In addition, the Glen Ellyn Patch was nice enough to help us spread the word as well. You can read their article here!

All this great news is a wonderful way to start the Christmas season. I hope as we continue to work on blankets (when we have a free moment!) we also take the time to enjoy the people and pets around us. I think we all need to rest up a bit.....2018 is going to be another BIG year for homeless pets!

God bless us, every one,

Your Beautiful Creations!

Pets you are helping!

A Special thank you from ... Chenango SPCA

"One of your amazing volunteers stopped in yesterday with a bag full of blankets (shown below). This is at least the second batch she has sent us, one more beautiful than the next. I thought you would like to see one of our kittens, Ham, picking out her own blanket! Again, thank you for all you do!"

P.S. from Linda: Shelters do not typically notify me when they receive blankets, so please let me know if you drop any off, so that we can add them to our total count. Thank you!

Shelter "Thank You's"...

Besides providing tremendous comfort to shelter pets, the wonderful blankets our volunteers make have many practical uses at the shelters. From cradling pets as they come out of surgery, to helping them snuggle to a warming disk without the danger of getting burned, to facilitating transport (as mentioned below). Thank you!

"Your box of beautiful handmade blankets arrived on Wednesday. Thank you! One great feature of the blankets that I forgot to mention, when extoling the durability of these blankets is this: They wick away moisture! I use then to line crates when taking dogs & cats to the low-cost spay/neuter clinic in Durant, OK (80 miles away). By the time we get back to the farm, most crate floors are wet from urine. But the crated kitties and doggies resting on top of the blankets from Comfort for Critters stay dry! This is not the case when using newspapers or pee-pads. So thank you!" ~ Red River SPCA

"Thank you so much Linda and CFC. You and your volunteers are awesome. Our kitties LOVE their blankets" ~ North Texas Cat Rescue

"Hearing there are more blankets coming is always such wonderful news! We are so grateful to all of your angels that would do this for our animals! You will give them comfort and you have warmed our hearts! Thank you, thank you, thank you!!" ~ Collin County Animal Services

"I wish I could record all the wonderful comments we get from adopters when we present them with the blankets you all make for each kitty to go home with. Thank you so much from ADOPT Pet Shelter." ~ Animals Deserving of Proper Treatment / ADOPT

"Thank you for your recent donation of handcrafted blankets to the Stevens-Swan Humane Society. It is only through the generosity of our community that we are able to shelter the more than 3,000 animals that come through our doors each year. Thank you for helping us continue our mission!" ~ Stevens-Swan Humane Society

Shipping Funds Always Needed...

Here's another way to help us ship the hundreds of blankets we mail each and every month. Visit Amazon or Etsy to purchase one of our inexpensive "Remnants Reborn" blankets created by Linda, CFC's founder, using only remnant yarn after making shelter blankets. You'll be sponsoring a big box of 20 blankets, which will be shipped to a shelter!

Each blanket comes with the above card, to explain how it's helping homeless pets, so it makes a great gift!

What CFC Volunteers Have to Say....

A big thank you goes to the many volunteers who leave feedback on the CFC website. I love sharing your thoughts with other volunteers, who likely feel exactly the same!

  • "I love to crochet and it gives me great pleasure to know how much these animals enjoy my efforts. I think the blankets will give comfort and warmth to the animals who do not have forever homes yet. I love all the work CFC is doing for these homeless creatures." ~ Tonda H. in Plano, TX
  • "All of my pets have been rescues. I have a great passion for their plight. I love to crochet but need a purpose. This is my opportunity to give back. Win, win! The shelter I donated to was receptive and grateful. I hope these blankets will bring them a sense of safety and love. Thank you for giving me this opportunity to give of myself in a way that is so rewarding to me." ~ Debby K. of Ambler, PA
  • "My reason for making blankets is that I know I am helping. I think the blankets will give warmth and comfort and I thank you for what YOU do!" ~ Nancy, T. of East Providence, RI
  • "I have three pugapoos and love animals. Since my husband won't let me get any more dogs, this is my way of loving them from afar! I hope these blankets give the cats and dogs comfort and a feeling of home!" ~ Jennifer T. of Acton, ME

A few friendly reminders...

Once you have some blankets made, please check our "Shelters Supported" page to find a shelter near you (or at least one in your state). Feel free to ship your blankets directly to them, or drop them off. The shelters rarely notify me when they receive blankets, so please let me know via our website form or in an email.

Don’t forget to leave your name and address on the blankets or materials you drop-off at CFC headquarters in Glen Ellyn, IL so that I can send a thank you note.

Remember that we are all juggling CFC, jobs, pets and kids! We do reply to every inquiry, but it may take a day or two. Thanks for your patience!

Review CFC on Facebook!

Facebook is an awesome way for us to help spread the word on our mission to comfort all those pets we can't adopt. If you like what we're doing, please take a few minutes and leave us a "review" on Facebook.

Once you're on the CFC FB page, just find the "Reviews" category. You should see a spot where you're asked, "Tell people what you think."

We are "liked" by over 2,300 people, but we could always use more fans (who couldn't?). Thank you!

Another Way Dogs Save Lives

If you've ever donated blood, you understand just how easy it is and how life-saving it can be. There is a constant need for canine blood, for the same reasons human blood is such a precious commodity. It's used to help sick and injured dogs, and can save a life when a pet needs surgery or a transfusion.

Thank you to Woof Designz Keepsakes

Woof Designz Keepsakes, a company started by Lisa Sperando, makes memorabilia keepsakes based on a pet's photograph or their breed. Each month they donate 10% of their sales to animal shelters or organizations which were suggested by their customers.

In November, one of their customers asked that the donation go to CFC! Their funds helped us ship two big boxes of blankets! You can find their full line of custom made items here!

Lisa has loved, and cared for, animals since the age of two. She's found her calling in making keepsakes for those who love their pets. Her items are perfect to celebrate a pet in your life, and a meaningful way to remember a pet you've lost.

I've checked out her website and plan to order something for myself this Christmas!
